Lauren turns 10!

Pardon me while I indulge my motherly love and show off my daughter a bit! I can't believe that she has hit the double digit milestone so quickly! I pulled together a few of my favorite memories of her to share.....if you have it, you should listen to "Slipping through my fingers" from "Mamma Mia" while you read this....it's cathartic. I wanted to put these in some sort of chronological order, but that requires a lot of time in Blogger, and it's getting late, so you'll have to mentally organize her by age!

The first time I saw Lauren she was taking the world by storm and letting everyone know what she wanted - and nothing has changed! She was a wonderful baby, always quick to smile and loved attention from her family - especially her brother!

This is her first birthday photo page from our album.

This is birthday # 2 - a ladybug party.

Some favorite photos from the lake house before mom and dad moved to St. Louis. The kids really miss that house! Especially the water. Lauren was too young to do many of the activities it offered, but we got a lot of snuggle time in on their porch swing!

This is Lauren trying her hand at "mutton busting" in the Laramie rodeo on our trip to Wyoming. She won a $2 bill and stayed on longer than any of the locals! That's my girl - never afraid to try anything!

Favorite early winter scenes....Jason frolicking in the background!

The question bears repeating....but still it makes me smile.

I miss these days....sibling squabbles rule at our house now.

One of my favorite pictures of Lauren with her daddy at Oma's house in front of my favorite flower - blue hydrangea!

And a lovely, but way too mature looking Lauren at age 5 in her first and so far, only dance recital!

Some more favorite photos - Lauren in front of the badlands topography....

and a lovely view of the Grand Tetons from our lodge in 2006.

Let's just hope that I'm not heading into teen years where this outfit becomes more than a Halloween costume!

I prefer the angelic look here at her first communion!

Here she is recently wearing.....does anyone recognize it?.....a bridesmaid dress from my wedding that's been refashioned into a 1904 dress for the St. Louis Exposition and World's Fair recreation that her school does in 4th grade each year.
I drew the stage decoration...it's supposed to be the Grand Festival Hall.

Well, that's a quick look at some of my favorite highlights of the past decade.....

So here is the birthday girl from our party this evening! She got a Nintendo DSi, a hand me down nano from me (who upgraded), a trip to Equestrian camp from grandma and grandpa coming up in 2 weeks, and next week is her pool / slumber party while Jason is at Boy Scout camp! Not bad for a decades worth of growing!

Family Updates

I started this draft eons ago - back in April, but never finished it as the "bad karma" continued and then the end of school activities kicked in. So, here it is...but I'll be updating it real soon.

April 2009:

We've been having a bit of bad karma around here lately, so I apologize for not being able to update more recently. Actually I guess this is early considering my past record! Anyway, it began with a crazy bus trip to Jefferson City that I attended with Lauren's 4th grade class. Short version is we had one teacher rushed by Ambulance to the hospital with a thyroid problem, our bus had an "air" problem which turned out to be the hydraulic brakes, so we got a replacement bus, then we blew a tire on the way home and had to limp up the exit to wait for another motorcoach. Then on the final leg home, I twisted my neck and aggravated my injury from last year, causing all my dizzyness to return in full force. Which led to MRI / MRA and continued doctor visits.

We've had a couple of deaths in the family, one very sudden and unexpected with the passing of my uncle Tom who had only been diagnosed 3 weeks before. And we mourned the passing of, and the expense of replacing, our only 6 year old washing machine. So in the midst of funerals we had no way to wash clothes, and I was making trips to mom and dad's and my good friend Amy's house to keep up. I now have a new washing machine that very appropriately sings to me when I start it.

Next came Jason's broken foot. Yes, the rip stick was involved. He has to wear a walking cast for 4 weeks then a smaller brace for about 3 weeks. His worst fear was that he would have to miss his band competition at Six Flags last Friday, but the doctor said he could walk as much as he could tolerate.
videoHere is a sample of their performance that day. Jason is the one with the ethereal glow due to his lack of skin tone! He got that from me - I always glow on the beach, one of the reasons I don't like to go! Here is a picture of him eating lunch at Six Flags that shows his cast.

The result of my MRA did not give me any explanation for the dizziness issues, but did reveal a questionable "kink" or "twist" in my carotid artery. I was told that I would need a CT scan to determine if this was the worst case scenario - an aneurysm. However, I'm allergic to the dye they use in the scan, so my doctor reviewed the options and decided to send me to a neurosurgeon for him to review the tests with a more well trained eye and hopefully avoid having to have the scan at all. Well, 2 days later she called me out of the blue and decided she did want me to have the scan after all. This call came at 8am so I knew that she had been thinking this over after hours and I told her that didn't do much for my comfort level. Her explanation was that then the surgeon would have all the info and we wouldn't have to wait for more tests if treatment was necessary. Again, being worried about time was not good for my BP. So, after premedicating with prednisone and major benadryl, I had the test and the good news was that it's a normal part of my anatomy. Nothing to be concerned about. So, while I still have dizziness issues, they won't kill me.

Easter Stamp Camp

Finally it's here! I know you've been waiting "patiently" (not all have been, I know) but between getting a new iMac and waiting for Dave to have time to transfer all the files from the old Mac to the new one, Fine Arts Day, field trips, an aggravated neck injury and Spring Break....well, needless to say, I've had many obstacles between me and my stamping and blogging lately.

If you are interested in attending the class, I will be offering it on both Friday April 3, at 7pm and on Sat. April 4 at 2 pm. Space will be limited so please call me right away. The fee is $20 and includes the 2 cards and the chick and bunny basket.

I'm working on a Mother's Day class for the end of April, and a couple of classes in May as well. Keep visiting the blog for updates on classes and stamp camps! Spring has finally gotten me inspired and I am working on some really cute things that I can't wait to share!

Speaking of cute things....one of the benefits of my new computer is the ability to iChat via teleconference with my nephew Tyler. This week I was able to play Peek-a-boo with him - it was so fun! My sister actually called me today to see if I would baby sit him via video conference while she took a shower! I would have if I hadn't been out the door to guitar with Lauren. She said that he points to the computer when she asks him where Aunt Susan is! At least he'll know who I am next time I see him!

If any of you have iChat capability, add me to your buddy list! It's a great way to keep in touch!

Keep stamping! Stamp outside an enjoy the weather!

Susan

We've had a busy couple of weeks since the holidays. I had to host our Bunco club right after New Years, so I didn't put away decorations until mid January. I am cutting down on self imposed stress as much as possible and didn't want to deal with the mess of trying to get it all done in such a short time.

Last week was Jason's 13th birthday! He is officially a teenager now, but has been perfecting that art for quite some time. He decided to have a slumber party. Last time we're going to do that. It is amazing how much boys change in one year. While still very nice boys, his friends have become a little less respectful, looking at me as if I've grown two heads when I tell them they can't have buttered popcorn in the family room. And it was really funny to take them out to the pizza buffet and look in the rear view mirror to see them all illuminated by the blue glow of cell phones/ MP3 players/ digital game players....whatever. But my favorite part was going into Jason's room while they were downstairs, and being overwhelmed by the smell of stinky boy! UGH.....they had come directly from school and apparently all had gym that day.

But we survived, and here are the pictures to prove it!

These popcorn boxes are actually filled with miniature cupcakes that are decorated to look like popcorn. The boys loved them, and they weren't baby-ish which is oh-so important!

At the end of the evening the boys were playing Apples to Apples and I had visions of them in the future having a guys poker night, so I took a picture. At times they were so funny!

Jason got a rip stick which is a fancy skateboard with a hinge in the middle. Very difficult to ride but he has mastered it. And from us he received a basketball hoop, but since we've had 2 ft. of snow since his party, we have yet to set it up.

Now for something fun! I love this show - Whose Line is it Anyway? and this is a great segment from it - get ready to laugh!

I have actually been stamping lots of valentines. I had a show Friday night and it was very well attended. I'll be posting those pictures soon!

Smiles!

2008: A Year in Review

Yes, I did fall off the face of the earth, but I've managed to climb my way back up to it again! We've had such a busy fall and holiday season, combined with illnesses at inopportune times that have prevented me from having the energy needed in the evening to post! But that doesn't mean that I haven't been stamping! I will admit that I didn't send out Christmas Cards this season, but I may send something out for Valentines instead. So, in the tradition of the annual Christmas Card, I'm including a family "letter" here. That way I can include as many pictures as I want and not run out of room!

2008 started off with a very snowy winter for St. Louis. We had 4 storms that dumped at least 4 inches each on us - and every time, Dave was out of town. That meant I got to do the shoveling! Good exercise, I guess! The ones who really enjoyed it were of course, the kids. Jason and Lauren became expert igloo builders, but I wouldn't say Jason was very helpful at shoveling the driveway. He would try, but the snow would beckon and he'd be off playing again each time I looked around. Oh well. I don't think that we have many years left of childhood exuberance with him, so I let it go.

Lauren took First Communion this year at Palm Sunday and we took the opportunity to take an updated family photo. We do clean up ok.
We spent the Easter holiday here alone this year. Mom and Dad went to Streator to be with GG. Like winter, spring brought lots of precipitation and we ended up hunting Easter Eggs inside!

Our tax refund went towards needed home improvements this year, as almost always! One project that I was really glad to get done was the remodeling of our master bathroom. Dave has become an expert at laying tile, and I usually do the grouting. We took out our cabinets, painted them green (what else?) then I distressed them and antiqued them. They turned out really good - but I just realized I never took and "after" photo, so I'll have to put that in later! My dad contributed some carpentry by adding a top extension to the height of the cabinet and putting in a drawer. Now we don't have to bend to our knees to brush our teeth! It's really like a spa in there now.

Jason and Lauren had their final piano recital (at least together) this year. Neither of them are taking piano lessons right now - but Jason is the piano player for the jazz band and he is really doing well under his grandfathers tutelage. I've been waiting to post this update hoping that Dave would finish his editing of the video, but it's taking longer than I thought, so I'll have to add that later as well. His concert was amazing, but we couldn't hear the piano too well, so Dave is overlaying it with a recording of Jason playing his part at home.

My new venture in the world of music included singing with the St. Louis Harmony Chorus this year. They are an acapella group of women -about 75 strong- who just took 18th place out of 700 choruses worldwide at the International Competition in Hawaii this past November. Wish I could say I was there, but it wasn't in the budget!
I have really enjoyed the challenge of singing a harmonic part with them, because even though I still sing the highest voice, in this case a tenor, it is not the melody. It was the main attraction for me - I'm not sure about all this singing and competition stuff so we'll see if I continue it in 2009. I may have to find a better match for my time. I tried my voice in a quartet for a time but unfortunately, I couldn't give the time needed for rehearsals together. I have free days, and everyone else free nights! This is our performance at our annual show. I'm on the top right corner - in the shadows since the couldn't get the curtain open enough. They put the people that are not attending the competitions on the outside of the rows in order to keep the primary competing chorus in the center. They are an amazing group!

Summer brought - you guessed it - more rain! We were flooded again! Dave's sister and family visited on their way home from Oklahoma and we took them down to the riverfront to see the coast guard activity at the arch. Tom is in the Coast Guard- and yes, we do have CG here in the middle of the nation!

This is the best way to get a picture of the arch - I always laugh at the tourists taking pictures up close - it just looks like a wall!

We took them to the zoo and I got this wonderful picture of Lauren with the hippos and Samuel's reflection as well. It's one of my favorites!

And here you can really see how far up the steps of the Arch the river was creeping - and actually it was on it's way down by then. There is a road down on the other side of the flagpoles that is submerged.

Lauren's Girl Scout Troop took a trip to Springfield IL this past spring to visit the Lincoln Presidential Library and home. This picture was taken at his tomb. It was ironic, but we were there on the anniversary of the day his funeral train arrived back in Springfield. We had a fun night in the hotel with many giggly girls!

Dave and I spent a day with friends touring the MO wineries. It was a great day - the MO countryside is beautiful, and the wineries have become quite the "happening" spot. One of them has a cave underneath where the temperature is a constant 65 year round and they have tables down there for you to relax in the cool air.

Ok, so this picture is obviously at the new Busch Stadium. What a great night we had for a game (even though I think we lost). What you can't tell is that this is right after I fell and had a concussion, and that I was suffering from extreme vertigo in those high seats! I can tell that I'm "wearing" a smile, but it's not real. How did I fall, you ask? Well, it's a thorougly exciting tale involving a piano bench. ...you can read about it in previous posts....but I still have lingering affects from it...stiff neck in the morning, still have vertigo on occasion and I never had that before. It's not been fun! I even had some memory loss when planning our vacation to DC and didn't realize it until we got there and I had made plans that I didn't remember talking about.

Speaking of vacation, we were supposed to go West again this year to the Grand Canyon, but we put that off at least a year for many reasons, including a need to go home and visit with family, and also due to Dave's travel schedule. Dave spent much of 2008 traveling WAY more than usual to complete a management course offered by the government called "NECHLI"....I forget the meaning of the acronym, but it gives him one of the pieces he will need to ultimately be eligible for executive positions. He attended 3 week long classes, each in a different city, with the final one being in Washington DC. So, we decided that the only way we were going to get a vacation in this year was to piggy back on that trip and go to DC. My dear friends the Heacocks graciously extended the use of their condo in the "mountains" of PA for us to stay for a week during the first part of our vacation. This was our chance to kick back- which Dave really needed. We did some day trip sight seeing, including a trip to Horseshoe bend, which was really close, Altoona train museum, the memorial for Flight 93 from 9-11, and Delgrosso's theme park. But the highlight for the kids were the black bears that raided the trash bins one night. All these trips out west and we've never seen a bear, and they were waiting for us in PA!!!

While in DC, Dave went to his classes and the kids and I did the touring. We did the Smithsonian museums, went to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to see all that money the government seems to print at will, the Air and Space museum, and the National Archives. They were really impressed with getting to see the Constitution. It was just like in the movie "National Treasure". Dave had a graduation party the last night and I got to meet many of his superiors that attended. The next day we headed out to Laura and Tom's for a brief but much needed visit with the cousins, and stopped at Great Falls National Park on the way. So, with bears and this giant waterfall, we felt like we had gotten a taste of the west on our trip!

The cousins have all gotten so big! The kids had a wonderful time fishing, swimming in the lake and just being goofy. The grown ups had some wonderful bonding time talking late into the night. Even though we were on our whirlwind trip home, it was a great quick visit.

Our last stop was going down the highway 81, I had to get a picture of the kids at James Madison, my alma mater! It was really strange to be back there, but fun to see how much the town had grown.

I'm skipping the fall review because it was posted recently enough that you can scroll back to it if you want. Christmas came faster this year than it ever has! Lauren and I both suffered from a fever virus that lasted several days - hers caused us to miss my chorus performance at the Sheldon Concert Hall, which I was really looking forward to. A week after she recovered, I came down with it and had to cancel our Holiday Open House, and I had to miss Lauren's singing performance in special chorus doing the nutcracker.

But we were healthy for Jason's jazz band piano debut which I hope to have audio of soon. My dad cut off the tips of his fingers on a table saw right after his 70th birthday! They were able to reattach them, but his middle finger top joint had to be frozen, so he'll lose some mobility. Not good for piano playing for now though!

Amy and Dan brought the main attraction to Christmas this year - Tyler! He is so adorable, and such a good baby - must run in the family! He reminds me a lot of Jason at that age - except Jason didn't have an attachment to the "nuk". Tyler stood alone for the first time while at our house. It was fun having baby toys around again for a time!

Lauren had a very merry American Girl Doll christmas. She has really enjoyed reading the books, watching the movies and playing with her new friends that have moved into her room and seem to have as much furniture as she does. Jason made her some furniture in Grandpa's workshop to give her for a present. Now he thinks he wants to start a business and sell them on ebay.
Lauren is also getting a guitar for Christmas with money she was given. I'm looking into lessons for her in place of piano.

We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We look forward to seeing many of you again in 2009!

More inside pictures

Here are the insides of the other two stationary boxes that I made. I have more in the works now for a class soon, so keep checking back in for date announcements!

I was really trying to break out of my color comfort zone on this first one. It turned out very bohemian which I liked, and there is a little green, but I tried to mix colors that I'm not always reaching for. I like the results, so that just proves you need to experiment now and then.

This color combination is more my classic style - but I tried to lean more blue than green, so at least I pushed it a little!

These were really fun to do! Very time consuming, which is why they make great gifts that are really apreciated, but overall a worthy endeavor for a special someone!

Ghouls just wanta have fun so here's Lauren and I all ghouled up at our annual Fall Fun Fest and Spooky School at our church. We have the best time - it's a good old fashion fall fest with cakewalks, chili cook off, pumpkin carving contest etc....we even tye dyed pumpkin t-shirts for the kids to complete with faces. Some of my creative friends put on a Spooky School down in the sunday school rooms complete with P. E. (Pirate Education). Dave was the school janitor who had skeletons in his closet. It's a haunted house that is geared for younger kids but still scary enough.

Here we are playing the "Wrap your Mummy" game. Lauren had me wrapped up good by the time she was done.

And finally, some pictures of the special cupcakes that I made to share with the kids. If there is one thing we are never short of at our church it is good food, and several of us get creative in our offerings. The kids loved them - especially the owls! Maybe the bugs looked too realistic, but there were some left over for us to take home, so I didn't hear anyone complaining!

Smiles,

Susan

Attendance Prizes

You aren't going to believe that I gave these away as attendance prizes at my Mother's Club meeting this month! I hardly believe it myself, but I did! Now I just need to make some for myself and as Christmas presents.

These beautiful stationary boxes open up to reveal a collection of matching cards, notecards, and tags all in this lovely box with a notebook to let you make your gift giving lists, or make notes to yourself...and a small pocket that you could insert stamps into. Tomorrow I'll post the insides of the other boxes.

If you are interested in attending a class and making a box as a gift, please send post a reply and I'll email the information to you. I'm still working out the details, but will post the date soon to have them ready for the holidays.

Wouldn't your friends just love these? What a thoughtful gift - and they are great themed for the holidays - I like to make them thank you cards - and for birthdays etc....

As I sit here updating, the wind has really turned blustery outside and the house is creaking and drafty. Think I'll end the day with my favorite hot toddy, a little "Sex in the City" movie, and enjoy the full swing of fall! Don't you love driving through a bunch of dancing leaves in the street?

Well, now I'm getting fanciful, so it must be late!

Happy Stamping!

Susan
